Everything you need to know about

Learning to Drive

You probably have many questions about getting behind the wheel.

From getting your provisional licence, how many lessons you'll need, how much everything costs, how long it will take you to learn how to drive, and many more!

It's a very exciting time and it's great to arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible, so we've listed some of the most common questions we get asked below.

Take a read, and if you still have something on your mind that we haven't answered, simply get in contact with us and we'll happily give you the information you're looking for.

How quickly can I get a Provisional Driving Licence?

When applying online, assuming you have completed all the necessary sections, provided the correct information, and no further checks have to be carried out, you should receive your new licence in around a week.

Postal applications usually take about 3 weeks.

It's worth remembering that sometimes things don't always go smoothly, so give yourself plenty of time and make sure you have received your licence before booking your lessons or getting behind the wheel.

How do I apply for a Provisional Driving Licence?

You can apply for your Provisional Driving Licence on the official government website.

https://apply-provisional-driving-licence.service.gov.uk/

Completing an online application is the quickest, easiest, and cheapest way, although you can ask for a 'D1 Application for a driving licence' at your local Post Office which can be completed and posted to the DVLA.

You will need to include up-to-date passport-style photographs with your application, or provide valid passport details that can be used to create your licence.

At the time of writing, the costs for online applications are £34.00, and for posted applications are £43.00.  You can check current charges on the gov website.

When can I apply for a Provisional Driving Licence?

You can apply for a provisional driving licence when you're 15 years and 9 months old.

However, don't get too excited as you won't be able to actually start driving until you're 17!

There is, however, one exception to the rule.

You can drive a car when you are 16 if you receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

Do I need a Provisional Licence before I can learn to drive?

Absolutely, it is essential!

A valid UK provisional licence is necessary before you can begin taking driving lessons.

Driving without one will land you in hot water before your official driving journey has begun, could be detrimental to your future licence applications and increase your car insurance premiums!

Driving without a licence or insurance may seem minor compared with other motoring offences; however, the effects can be far-reaching.

You could receive hefty fines, your insurance premiums are likely to be sky high, and you could even be disqualified from driving in certain circumstances.

What is a Provisional Driving Licence?

The provisional driving licence allows you to drive on all UK roads except motorways before you pass your driving test.

However, you must be supervised by your driving instructor or any other driver over the age of 21 who has held a full driving licence for at least three years.
